As soon as Ethiopia announced the commencement of work on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on the Blue Nile, near the Sudanese border, a wave of reactions ensued, ranging from strong support for the project to outright opposition, with some viewing it as a threat to the existence of downstream countries. Each side began presenting justifications to support its position, and a great deal of conflicting information circulated in the media and books, obscuring the truth amidst this thicket of contradictory data. We have strived to ensure these answers are clear to non-experts without compromising established scientific principles, while also welcoming comments and discussions from specialists and interested parties.
